Eastern white pine adelgid
Pineus strobi
Description
The Eastern white pine adelgid (Pineus strobi) is a small sap-sucking insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Adelgidae. It is a significant pest of coniferous trees, specifically targeting the genus Pinus. The most recognizable characteristic of this pest is the white, woolly wax filaments that the insects produce to cover their bodies, making colonies appear like small patches of cotton on the bark or needles.
This insect primarily infests various species of pine, with a preference for white pine. It colonizes the twigs, branches, and trunks of the trees. While established mature trees can sometimes tolerate low-level infestations, young saplings and nursery stock are highly susceptible to severe damage and growth inhibition due to the insects' feeding activity.
The life cycle of Pineus strobi involves complex generations, often characterized by different morphs that may inhabit different parts of the host tree. Overwintering occurs in the nymph stage, usually nestled in bark crevices or near needle bases. As temperatures rise in spring, the insects mature, and the females begin egg production, allowing for rapid population explosions within a single growing season.
The feeding process involves the insertion of stylets into the plant tissue, where the insects extract essential nutrients. This results in significant physiological stress, causing yellowing of needles, needle drop, and stunted growth. Furthermore, the honeydew secreted by the adelgids encourages the growth of sooty mold, which impairs the tree's ability to photosynthesize effectively.
Effective management and control strategies include:
- Regular monitoring of pine trees for signs of white, cottony masses.
- Mechanical removal of infested twigs where possible.
- Application of systemic insecticides (such as neonicotinoids) during the active growth phase.
- Dormant season applications of horticultural oils to smother overwintering nymphs.
- Enhancing tree vigor through appropriate fertilization and water management to mitigate stress.
