Boxwood scale

Boxwood scale (Pinnaspis buxi) is a destructive pest belonging to the family Diaspididae (armoured scale insects) within the order Hemiptera. This insect is a significant concern for horticulturists, particularly in subtropical climates and indoor plant collections, as it thrives on evergreen foliage.

The primary host for this scale is Buxus (boxwood), but it frequently infests a wide range of other plants, including palms, orchids, and various greenhouse shrubs. These pests primarily attach themselves to the underside of leaves and along stems, where they remain relatively sedentary for most of their adult life cycle.

The biology of Pinnaspis buxi involves a complex life cycle characterized by distinct sexual dimorphism. Females are protected by elongated, brown-colored shells (scales) and remain stationary while feeding and producing eggs. Males are smaller, winged, and mobile, moving across the plant surface to locate females for reproduction, which allows the infestation to spread rapidly.

The damage caused by boxwood scale is primarily due to nutrient depletion through phloem feeding. Infested plants exhibit yellowing (chlorosis), leaf drop, and stunted growth. Furthermore, the honeydew secreted by these insects can lead to the development of sooty mold, which coats the leaves and further inhibits the plant's ability to photosynthesize effectively.

Managing this pest requires a strategic approach since the protective scale provides immunity against many contact sprays. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control:

• Apply systemic insecticides that are absorbed into the plant's sap.
• Use horticultural oils to suffocate the insects by covering their breathing pores.
• Prune and destroy heavily infested branches to reduce the population.
• Ensure proper airflow to create an environment less favorable for scale colonization.
• Monitor new plant material before introducing it to your collection.
