Javanese scale
Pinnaspis javanensis
Description
Systematic position. The Javanese scale (Pinnaspis javanensis) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. As a specialized sap-sucking insect, it is a significant pest of various tropical and ornamental plants, protected by its hard, waxy scale covering that makes it resistant to many traditional control methods.
Host plants. This pest primarily targets a wide range of ornamental and greenhouse plants. It is frequently observed on members of the Marantaceae and Araceae families. The insects prefer to settle on the undersides of leaves and along young shoots, where they create dense colonies that can go unnoticed during the initial stages of infestation.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, nymph (crawler), and adult stages. The crawlers are the active dispersal stage, capable of moving to new sites on the host plant. Once a suitable location is found, the scale settles and initiates the construction of its waxy shield. This shield provides protection against both environmental stresses and many external chemical treatments.
Nature of damage and harm. By feeding on cell sap, the scale causes physiological stress to the plant. Typical damage includes localized chlorosis (yellowing) at the site of feeding, reduced growth rate, and leaf distortion. Heavy infestations lead to significant loss of plant vigor, leaf drop, and in severe cases, the death of the affected plant parts.
Protection measures. Effective control requires an integrated approach. Because the protective cover shields the insect from contact chemicals, systemic insecticides that are absorbed by the plant are the most effective solution. Regular scouting, proper sanitation, and the quarantine of new plant material are essential to prevent the spread of this pest within a greenhouse or nursery environment.
- Routine inspection of leaf undersides
- Application of systemic insecticides
- Mechanical removal of small, isolated infestations
- Strict quarantine protocols for incoming plant materials
