Lesser snow scale
Pinnaspis strachani
Description
Pinnaspis strachani, commonly known as the lesser snow scale, is an insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is a highly polyphagous insect that attacks a wide variety of economic and ornamental plants, proving to be a persistent issue in both tropical and indoor environments.
The host range of this pest includes hibiscus, citrus species, cotton, avocado, coconut palms, and numerous ornamental tropical plants. It prefers colonizing stems, twigs, and the undersides of leaves, making it difficult to detect in the early stages of an infestation when the population is still low.
The biological cycle of this scale consists of egg, crawler, nymph, and adult stages. The crawler stage is the primary dispersal phase, during which the insects move across the plant surface before settling down to feed. The females form a protective, white, or light-colored waxy cover that renders them resistant to many contact insecticides.
Damage caused by Pinnaspis strachani includes chlorosis, leaf drop, and stunted vegetative growth. As they feed, they drain plant sap, which reduces the host's vitality. Furthermore, the presence of these insects can lead to the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and hinders the plant's photosynthetic ability.
- Routine monitoring of nursery stock for scale presence.
- Systemic insecticide applications, especially targeting the crawler phase.
- Horticultural oils or insecticidal soaps for non-toxic control options.
- Biological control using parasitoid wasps or predatory beetles.
- Proper sanitation practices, including the removal of heavily infested plant tissues.
