Tea scale

Systematic position: The tea scale (Pinnaspis theae) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. This small scale insect is a significant pest of subtropical crops, capable of causing serious economic losses if populations remain unchecked in cultivation areas.

Affected crops: The tea bush is the primary host for this species. However, it also attacks various citrus species, olive trees, laurel, and other woody ornamental plants. The pest is particularly problematic in humid, warm climates where it can thrive on leaf surfaces and woody parts of the plants.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg, nymph (crawler), and adult stages. Adult females are protected by a characteristic brown, pear-shaped scale covering. The crawler stage is the primary method of dispersal, as these small insects crawl to new parts of the host plant or are distributed by wind and nursery stock movement.

Damage and economic impact: The tea scale feeds by inserting its mouthparts into the plant tissue to suck sap. This feeding activity leads to chlorosis, leaf spotting, and premature leaf drop. In severe infestations, the entire branch or bush can wither, significantly reducing the vegetative vigor and production yield of the affected tea plants.

Protection measures: Effective control of Pinnaspis theae requires an integrated approach to pest management:

• Regular field scouting to detect early infestations before they spread.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce pest pressure.
• Application of horticultural oils during the dormant season to suffocate overwintering scales.
• Targeted use of systemic insecticides during the peak activity of the crawler stage.
• Maintaining healthy plant nutrition to improve the resilience of tea bushes against environmental stress.
