Pissodes is a genus of snout beetles (weevils) belonging to the family Curculionidae. These insects are recognized as major pests of conifers throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Within the taxonomic hierarchy, they are part of the subfamily Molytinae, known for species that bore into the wood and inner bark of coniferous trees.

These pests primarily target various species within the Pinaceae family, such as pines, spruces, firs, and cedars. They are particularly destructive to young saplings in nurseries and forest plantations, although they also infest weakened mature trees. Different species of the genus may focus their attacks on the main leader, the lower trunk, or the roots.

The life cycle of Pissodes typically involves an egg, larval, pupal, and adult stage, lasting one or two years depending on local climate conditions. Adults feed on tender bark and buds, often creating feeding punctures. Females then lay eggs in the bark, and the resulting larvae feed on the inner bark and cambium, creating extensive galleries that effectively girdle the tree or branch.

The damage caused by Pissodes is characterized by the cessation of vertical growth, wilting of the top shoots, and eventual tree mortality. Larval feeding destroys the vascular tissue, which leads to structural weakness and tree death. The presence of the pest is often indicated by resin flow from feeding sites and the characteristic wilting of new growth.

Control measures require an integrated approach involving silvicultural practices and chemical interventions. Management strategies include the removal and destruction of infested trees to eliminate brood sources before the next generation of adults emerges. In high-value plantations, systemic or contact insecticides are applied during critical periods of adult migration to minimize impact.
