Systematic position: The Banded pine weevil (Pissodes castaneus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a significant wood-boring insect that causes substantial damage to conifer plantations, particularly within European forestry settings.
Host plants: This weevil primarily targets various species of pine, with Pinus sylvestris being one of the most susceptible hosts. While it shows a preference for pine, it can also occasionally affect spruce or fir trees, especially when the host trees are weakened by drought, stress, or other environmental factors.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle includes egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adults hibernate during the winter, emerging in early spring to feed on the bark of shoots. After mating, females deposit eggs into the bark of trunks or branches. Larvae create gallery systems beneath the bark, disrupting the vascular system of the host, before pupating in specially constructed chambers.
