Lodgepole terminal weevil

The lodgepole terminal weevil (Pissodes terminalis) is a destructive insect species belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is widely recognized as a serious pest in North American forests, specifically targeting the terminal leaders of young pine trees, which severely impacts their growth and economic value.

This weevil primarily infests the lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta). Its life cycle is tightly synchronized with the growth of the tree's terminal leader, as the larvae require the succulent tissue of the leading shoot to feed and develop. Young, vigorously growing trees are the most susceptible to infestation.

The adult weevils emerge in the spring and feed on the terminal shoots before mating. Females oviposit into the succulent tissues of the leader. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the phloem and xylem, creating galleries that effectively girdle the shoot, cutting off the supply of water and nutrients to the upper portions of the tree.

The damage caused by Pissodes terminalis is distinct: the infested terminal leader typically wilts, turns brown, and curls into a characteristic "shepherd's crook" shape. The loss of the terminal leader forces the tree to develop lateral branches as new leaders, resulting in crooked stems and significantly reduced timber quality.
