Description
The two-toothed pine beetle (Pityogenes bidentatus) is a destructive species of bark beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae and the subfamily Scolytinae. This beetle is particularly notorious for its impact on coniferous forests, acting as a secondary pest that exploits stressed or weakened trees but can aggressively infest healthy young pines during outbreaks.
The primary host trees for this pest are members of the Pinus genus, specifically the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). While it occasionally infests other conifers like spruce or larch, the beetle specifically targets sections of the tree with thin bark. This makes young trees and the upper canopy of mature trees particularly vulnerable to infestation.
The life cycle of the beetle is closely tied to climatic conditions. Adults overwinter in the litter or under the bark. In spring, when temperatures rise, they emerge to find a suitable host. The male constructs a nuptial chamber, and after mating, females excavate maternal galleries where they lay eggs. Larvae hatch and create their own individual feeding galleries, which disrupts the tree's phloem layer.
