Systematic position: The Hopkins pine bark beetle (Pityogenes hopkinsi) is a member of the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is widely recognized as a secondary pest that frequently attacks stressed or damaged pine trees in various forest ecosystems.

Host plants: This species primarily targets various pine species (Pinus spp.). It shows a preference for trees weakened by drought, disease, mechanical injury, or environmental stress, but in high-population densities, it can also infest relatively healthy young saplings.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle begins when adult beetles bore through the outer bark to create egg galleries. Females deposit eggs along these galleries, and upon hatching, the larvae feed on the phloem and cambium layers. The developmental rate is highly temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple generations per year in warmer climates.

Damage and economic impact: The primary damage is caused by the larval gallery network, which girdles the tree and disrupts the transport of water and nutrients. Infested trees typically show signs of crown dieback, needle discoloration, and the presence of fine frass on the bark surface, eventually leading to tree mortality.
