Pine bark beetle

Systematic position of the pine bark beetle (Pityogenes trepanatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera, the family Curculionidae, and the subfamily Scolytinae. It is a specialized pest that thrives in coniferous forests, often causing significant ecological and economic impact by targeting pine species across its geographical range.

The beetle primarily attacks species of the genus Pinus, with a strong preference for Pinus sylvestris. It frequently targets young saplings in dense stands or the thinner bark areas of the upper canopy in older, stressed, or weakened trees. Environmental stress, such as drought or air pollution, makes trees significantly more susceptible to infestation.

Biology and life cycle involve adults overwintering in the soil, leaf litter, or deep within the bark of host trees. In early spring, adults emerge to locate suitable hosts. The female initiates the construction of galleries under the bark, where eggs are deposited. Larvae emerge and bore perpendicular feeding tunnels, which disrupts the tree's vascular system, eventually pupating within the bark tissue.

Nature of damage and harmfulness are characterized by the girdling effect of the larval feeding galleries. By consuming the phloem and cambium layers, the pest destroys the tree's transport channels for water and nutrients. This damage leads to needle discolouration, branch dieback, and if the infestation is severe enough to girdle the stem, the eventual death of the entire tree.

Control measures require a strategic approach, focusing on sanitation and preventive silviculture. Key practices include:

• Prompt removal and destruction of infested timber before the next generation of beetles emerges.
• Implementation of pheromone-based trapping systems to monitor population levels.
• Regular inspections of forest stands to identify early signs of infestation.
• Application of targeted insecticides on the trunks of vulnerable trees during the peak flight period to prevent new attacks.
