Description

The curved-toothed bark beetle (Pityokteines curvidens) is a destructive member of the Curculionidae family, subfamily Scolytinae. This beetle is a significant pest of coniferous trees, specifically targeting fir species, and plays a major role in forest decline and mortality in temperate European regions.

The pest primarily infests silver fir (Abies alba), often targeting weakened or windthrown timber. However, during outbreaks caused by climatic stress such as prolonged drought, the beetle population increases exponentially, allowing it to successfully attack healthy, vigorous trees that would otherwise be able to defend themselves through resin flow.

Regarding its biology and life cycle, the beetle exhibits one or two generations per year depending on the altitude and temperature. Adults bore through the bark, creating nuptial chambers and longitudinal maternal galleries. The larvae then hatch and bore galleries perpendicular to the maternal ones, effectively girdling the tree and interrupting the flow of nutrients.

The damage caused is severe and often fatal for the host tree. Visible signs of infestation include the accumulation of reddish-brown frass (boring dust) at the base of the trunk and in bark crevices. As the vascular system of the tree is compromised, the crown foliage yellows and eventually turns red-brown, leading to tree death within a short period.
