Aleppo pine bark beetle

Systematic position. This species belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. It is a small representative of the twig beetle group, specifically adapted to damaging coniferous tree species, primarily pines, within various forest and urban landscape ecosystems.

Host plants. The primary hosts for feeding and reproduction are various species of the genus Pinus. The beetles frequently infest weakened, stressed, dying, or freshly felled trees. In tree nurseries and park areas, this pest can also attack young saplings, leading to premature mortality and significant loss of ornamental value in landscape plantings.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Pityophthorus chalepensis is closely tied to the phenology of its host conifers. Adults bore entrance holes through the bark to construct egg galleries underneath. Females deposit eggs in niches along the tunnels, where larvae eventually emerge. The larvae feed by constructing individual galleries within the phloem and cambium, eventually pupating under the bark. Overwintering typically occurs as adults within the galleries or in the forest litter.

Damage and economic significance. The damage caused by this insect involves the disruption of the tree's nutrient transport system. Numerous larval galleries sever the conductive tissues, leading to needle chlorosis, browning, and subsequent branch dieback. During population outbreaks, the pest can cause significant group mortality in pine stands, leading to economic losses in forestry.

Control measures. Management of this species is primarily focused on preventive silviculture. Key measures include conducting regular sanitation harvests, removing deadwood, and clearing wind-thrown trees, which serve as breeding sites. It is essential to remove infested material before the emergence of the next generation of adults. In nursery settings, the application of registered insecticides during peak flight periods may be necessary to protect valuable seedlings.
