Systematic position: The Mexican bark beetle (Pityophthorus mexicanus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae, specifically the subfamily Scolytinae. It is a specialized pest known to inhabit specific coniferous forests, primarily affecting native pine species in its distribution range.
Host plants: This insect primarily attacks various species of pine (Pinus). Both young seedlings and mature trees in weakened forest stands are susceptible to infestation. The beetle often targets smaller branches and shoots, posing a significant threat to forest nurseries and reforestation efforts.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Pityophthorus mexicanus is highly dependent on environmental conditions. Adult beetles overwinter in galleries beneath the bark or within the woody tissue of branches.
