Description
Systematic position. This species belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is a small but significant pest that plays a complex role in the ecological dynamics of coniferous forests, often acting as a secondary colonizer of stressed trees.
Host plants. The primary host is the Norway spruce (Picea abies). The beetle prefers thinner bark areas, typically targeting branches and the upper crown of the tree. While often associated with already weakened trees, significant outbreaks can lead to successful attacks on healthy stands.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is temperature-dependent, typically involving spring emergence of adults. Females construct galleries under the bark to deposit eggs. Larvae hatch and feed on the phloem, creating winding galleries that disrupt the vascular system of the host tree, eventually leading to local tissue death.

Damage and economic impact. The infestation results in the disruption of nutrient transport through the cambium layer. Protection measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial. Key strategies include regular forest monitoring, prompt sanitation logging, and the removal of infested material before new generations emerge. Pheromone-baited traps are effective for both population monitoring and reducing the number of adult beetles during peak flight periods.
