Systematic position. Sampson's bark beetle (Pityophthorus sampsoni) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. This small wood-boring beetle is a specialized pest that primarily targets the phloem and cambium layers of coniferous trees, acting as a significant factor in the decline of stressed forest stands.

Host plants and distribution. The species is primarily associated with various species of pines and spruces. It typically selects weakened, stressed, or storm-damaged trees for breeding, which allows it to thrive in forests that are already struggling with environmental pressures, thus serving as a secondary pest that contributes to tree mortality.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adults initiate attack by boring galleries beneath the bark, where they lay eggs.
