Platycleis

Platycleis is a genus of bush crickets belonging to the family Tettigoniidae. While many species are considered natural inhabitants of grasslands and pastures, certain members of this genus act as agricultural pests when their populations reach high densities. They are widely distributed and can cause significant damage to a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops if not properly managed.

These insects are members of the order Orthoptera. They are generalist herbivores, meaning they feed on a diverse range of plant species. Their ecological flexibility allows them to thrive in various agricultural landscapes, where they often migrate from uncultivated field margins into crops, especially during periods of drought or when natural food sources are depleted.

The biology of Platycleis follows an incomplete metamorphosis cycle. They typically overwinter as eggs deposited in the soil or within plant tissues. Damage caused by these bush crickets is primarily characterized by the consumption of leaf blades, stems, and reproductive plant parts. In cereal crops, they may feed on young ears and grains, leading to reduced yields and lower grain quality. Their chewing mouthparts cause ragged edges on leaves, and heavy infestations can result in significant foliage loss, which weakens the plant.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to reduce population outbreaks. Recommended strategies include:
