Artichoke plume moth
Platyptilia carduidactyla
Description
Systematic position. The artichoke plume moth (Platyptilia carduidactyla) is classified within the order Lepidoptera, family Pterophoridae. The species is named for its unique wing structure, where the forewings and hindwings are divided into feather-like lobes, giving the insect a distinct appearance when at rest.
Host plants. The primary economic host of this species is the globe artichoke (Cynara cardunculus). However, the pest is polyphagous within the Asteraceae family and can also infest various thistles, burdock, and sunflowers. These wild hosts often serve as reservoirs, allowing the moth to survive and re-infest cultivated fields.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs on the undersides of leaves near the base of the plant or directly on the buds. Upon hatching, the larvae begin feeding externally before boring into the stems or floral buds. Depending on the latitude, the pest can complete multiple generations per year, with larvae often overwintering inside the stalks of the host plant.
Damage and economic impact. The larval stage is the most destructive. By boring into the developing buds, larvae cause structural damage, feeding on the tender inner tissues. This makes the artichoke hearts unsalable and often leads to secondary infections like fungal rot. Stalk boring can cause wilting, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the death of the flower shoot, resulting in significant yield loss.
Control measures. Effective management requires an integrated approach:
- Sanitation: Destroying infested crop residues after harvest to reduce overwintering populations.
- Monitoring: Using pheromone traps to time insecticide applications accurately.
- Biological control: Encouraging natural predators and parasitoids in the field.
- Chemical control: Applying selective insecticides during the period when larvae are active on the exterior but before they bore into the buds.
