Description

Platypus cupulifer is a species of ambrosia beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family, subfamily Platypodinae. These insects are classified as technical wood pests that primarily target stressed, dying, or freshly cut hardwood trees, causing significant degradation to the quality of timber.

The beetle exhibits a strong preference for hardwood species such as oak and beech. It is highly problematic in forestry and timber storage facilities, where it can cause widespread economic losses by turning high-value timber into waste products due to its deep-tunneling behavior inside the heartwood.

The biological cycle is deeply intertwined with symbiotic fungi. The adult beetles tunnel deep into the tree, introducing specific fungal spores that colonize the tunnels. These fungi provide the essential nutritional source for the developing larvae. This dependency on fungi is a hallmark of the ambrosia beetle group.

Damage caused by Platypus cupulifer includes numerous small, round entry holes on the bark and characteristic tunnel networks within the timber. These tunnels not only weaken the mechanical structure of the wood but also lead to internal staining and rot, rendering the affected logs unsuitable for furniture or high-end construction.

Effective management strategies center on sanitation. The most critical measures involve the prompt removal of infested material and the efficient processing or drying of felled logs to reduce moisture levels, which inhibits the beetles' ability to colonize. Chemical protection of stored timber using appropriate insecticides can also be an effective control method.
