Description

The cylindrical bark beetle (Platypus cylindrus) is a wood-boring pest belonging to the family Curculionidae. Despite its common name, it is distinct from typical bark beetles, as it prefers to bore deeply into the woody tissue (xylem) rather than staying just beneath the bark, posing a severe threat to hardwoods.

This pest primarily attacks a variety of broad-leaved trees, with a strong preference for oak, beech, and chestnut. In certain conditions, it can also infest neglected fruit orchards, particularly targeting trees that are already stressed due to drought, soil compaction, or recent mechanical injuries.

The biology of Platypus cylindrus is unique because it relies on ambrosia fungi. Adults excavate intricate tunnels deep into the heartwood, where they cultivate specific fungi on the tunnel walls. These fungi serve as the exclusive food source for the developing larvae, making the beetle a serious threat to the structural integrity of the timber.

The primary symptom of infestation is the presence of fine, light-colored frass (sawdust) accumulating at the base of the trunk or caught in bark crevices. The damage is cumulative; the beetle's galleries sever water and nutrient pathways, leading to canopy dieback, rapid weakening of the tree, and often resulting in secondary colonization by other opportunistic pests or pathogens.

Integrated pest management is critical for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include the immediate removal and destruction of infested timber to prevent the emergence of the next generation. Additionally, maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization, as well as the use of pheromone-baited traps for monitoring in high-value areas, are essential components of a sound protection program.
