Description

Systematic position. Platypus excedens belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is classified as an ambrosia beetle, a group of wood-boring insects that live in complex symbiotic relationships with specific types of fungi.

Host plants. This pest primarily targets a variety of hardwood tree species. It is particularly known for infesting legumes, such as various species of Acacia. The beetle prefers trees that are already physiologically stressed, wounded, or dying, though it can also infest healthy timber under high population pressure.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is essentially subterranean within the wood. Adult beetles bore deep into the xylem of the trunk. They inoculate the galleries with symbiotic ambrosia fungi. The larvae feed exclusively on the fungal growth lining the tunnel walls rather than the wood itself, requiring a precise microclimate maintained by the adults.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The damage is characterized by intricate networks of tunnels that penetrate deep into the heartwood. These galleries are often stained by the associated fungi, severely reducing the commercial value of the timber. In living trees, the damage disrupts the vascular system, leading to rapid crown dieback and tree mortality.
