Systematic position. Platypus froggatti belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae (bark and ambrosia beetles). This species is a wood-boring insect native to Australia, recognized for its role in damaging hardwood species within forest ecosystems.
Host plants and economic impact. The beetle primarily attacks trees within the Eucalyptus genus. It is capable of infesting both stressed and apparently healthy trees. The economic damage is significant as the larvae bore deep into the timber, degrading the structural integrity and aesthetic quality of the wood, which often renders the timber unsuitable for commercial use.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is characterized by a symbiotic relationship with specific fungi. Adult beetles tunnel into the sapwood and heartwood to establish galleries. The females lay eggs within these tunnels, and the emerging larvae feed exclusively on the fungal mycelium cultivated by the adults. This biological process creates distinct discoloration within the infested timber.
Nature of damage. Infestation is usually detected by the presence of fine wood dust (frass) expelled from tiny entry holes in the bark. Internally, the galleries form complex, deep networks that disrupt the tree's vascular system.
