Platypus geminatus

Platypus geminatus is a dangerous forest pest belonging to the Curculionidae family, subfamily Scolytinae, and tribe Platypodini. Unlike typical bark beetles, platypodines lead a unique lifestyle by boring deep galleries directly into the xylem of trees, making them highly detrimental to tree vitality and wood quality.

This species primarily attacks broad-leaved trees, including oaks, beeches, and other valuable forestry species. The pest targets both weakened and apparently healthy trees, creating significant risks for forest management operations and reducing the economic value of timber harvested from infested stands.

The biology of Platypus geminatus is intimately tied to symbiotic fungi, which the females transport in specialized body structures called mycangia. As they bore into the heartwood, the insects cultivate the fungal mycelium, which serves as the primary food source for their larvae. The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages, with all stages except the egg actively participating in the expansion of the gallery system.

The primary damage is caused by the disruption of the tree's vascular system due to deep boring and the subsequent development of fungal infections. This leads to severe physiological stress, tree dieback, and the presence of extensive "pinhole" damage and staining in the wood, rendering it unsuitable for high-quality commercial lumber.
