Description

Platypus gracilis is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. Known colloquially as an ambrosia beetle, this insect is a significant pest of timber, characterized by its specialized habit of boring deep into the wood of trees rather than feeding on the bark layer.

The host range primarily includes various deciduous trees, with a strong preference for oak and beech. The pest typically targets trees that are physiologically stressed due to drought, disease, or mechanical damage, as well as fresh logs left in forest clearings, which are highly attractive for oviposition.

The biology of Platypus gracilis involves a complex symbiotic relationship with ambrosia fungi. Adults excavate intricate tunnels within the heartwood and introduce fungal spores. As the larvae develop, they feed exclusively on the fungal mycelium that grows on the walls of these galleries, rather than consuming the wood fibers directly.

The damage caused by these beetles is severe. The gallery systems penetrate deeply into the wood, causing structural damage and facilitating the entry of decay-inducing fungi. This leads to internal wood staining and a significant reduction in the economic value of the lumber, rendering it unsuitable for high-grade carpentry.

Effective management requires a proactive approach to forest hygiene:

  • prompt harvesting and removal of infested or weakened trees;
  • maintaining rapid transport cycles for fresh logs to prevent colonization;
  • reducing storage periods for roundwood in high-risk forest areas;
  • applying chemical treatments to timber stacks when immediate processing is not feasible.
