Systematic position: The Korean oak platypodid (Platypus koryoensis) is a member of the order Coleoptera, belonging to the Curculionidae family (subfamily Scolytinae). It is categorized as an ambrosia beetle, distinguished by its unique symbiotic relationship with specific fungi, which serve as the primary food source for its larvae inside the galleries.
Host plants: The primary hosts for this insect are species within the genus Quercus, particularly the Mongolian oak. While the pest often targets trees already suffering from environmental stress or drought, its ability to successfully colonize healthy, mature trees makes it a major threat to broad-leaved forests.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Platypus koryoensis is strictly wood-based. Adults bore deep galleries into the xylem of the tree.
