Lewis's platypus beetle

The Lewis's platypus beetle (Platypus lewisi) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. Unlike typical bark beetles that live between the bark and wood, these insects bore directly into the xylem. This behavior makes them particularly destructive to timber quality in various hardwood tree species across their natural range in East Asia.

The primary hosts for this pest include oaks and chestnuts. The beetles prefer trees that are already physiologically stressed, weakened by drought, or recently felled. However, under favorable environmental conditions or high population densities, they can attack vigorous trees, accelerating their decline and creating entry points for secondary pathogens and wood-decay fungi.

The biology of Platypus lewisi is characterized by a unique association with ambrosia fungi. Adult females tunnel deep into the heartwood and introduce spores of these fungi. The fungi grow on the walls of the tunnels and serve as the primary food source for the developing larvae. This symbiotic relationship is crucial for the beetle's survival and nutritional requirements.

The damage caused by these beetles is severe. Their tunnels disrupt the vascular system of the tree, while the associated fungal growth causes deep staining and structural degradation of the wood. Externally, the infestation is often marked by accumulations of fine, sawdust-like frass on the bark surface, indicating active boring operations within the trunk.

Effective management and control strategies for this species are focused on prevention:

• Regular forest sanitation, including the prompt removal of infested or dead trees.
• Rapid transport and processing of harvested timber to prevent colonization.
• Using monitoring traps with chemical attractants to detect population spikes.
• Avoiding unnecessary damage to standing trees during logging operations, as wounds attract beetles.
