Platypus secretus

Platypus secretus (lat. Platypus secretus) belongs to the weevil family (Curculionidae), subfamily of bark beetles (Scolytinae). This is a specialized species of insects that lead a cryptic lifestyle, making them difficult to detect during the early stages of wood colonization. It belongs to the group of stem pests that prefer weakened or damaged areas of bark.

The primary targets for this species are various hardwood tree species, including oak, beech, and other valuable timber crops. The pest most often attacks adult, physiologically weakened trees or forest areas affected by drought, fires, or mechanical damage, penetrating deep into the wood.

The biology of Platypus secretus is closely linked to the development of symbiotic fungi, which are transported by adults in special cavities on their bodies called mycangia. The life cycle involves the development of eggs, larvae, and pupae directly within the wood galleries. Larvae feed primarily on the mycelium of fungi that grows on the walls of the channels created by the parents.

The damage is characterized by the formation of a complex network of deep tunnels that disrupt the normal flow of sap, leading to the gradual drying out of the tree. Externally, the presence of the pest is revealed by fine wood dust (frass) accumulating in the bark crevices. A high population density of this pest can lead to the rapid decline of stands, as the tunnels compromise the structural integrity of the trunk.

Control measures include sanitary logging and the timely disposal of infested timber before the emergence of the new generation. To protect valuable individual trees, the following methods are used:

• Spraying trunks with systemic insecticides during the peak flight period of adults.
• Using pheromone traps to monitor population levels and capture the pests.
• Maintaining high levels of agrotechnology to improve tree resilience.
• Timely removal of deadwood, which serves as a breeding ground for the pest.
