Description
Systematic position. Platypus signatus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Platypodinae). These insects are commonly known as pinhole borers or ambrosia beetles because of their symbiotic relationship with specific fungi, which they cultivate within the galleries they excavate in host trees.
Crops damaged. The pest targets a wide variety of hardwood and softwood species. It primarily attacks stressed, dying, or freshly felled trees. In forestry and timber industries, Platypus signatus is considered a significant threat because it infests logs stored in logging yards, reducing the economic value of the wood.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle begins when adult beetles bore into the bark and sapwood to create tunnels.
