Description
Platypus subdepressus is a species of beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae, specifically the subfamily Scolytinae. Unlike typical bark beetles that live directly under the bark, members of the Platypodinae group, including this species, are known as ambrosia beetles because they bore deep into the heartwood of trees.
This pest mainly infests weakened, dying, or recently felled trees of various deciduous and coniferous species. In managed forests or timber yards, it poses a significant economic threat as it compromises the structural integrity and aesthetic quality of the wood, making it unsuitable for high-value construction or furniture production.
The biology of this beetle is unique due to its symbiotic relationship with fungi. Adult beetles tunnel into the xylem, introducing fungal spores into their galleries. The developing larvae feed exclusively on these fungi, known as ambrosia fungi, which grow on the walls of the tunnels, rather than feeding directly on the wood tissue.
Damage caused by this beetle is highly recognizable by the presence of small, circular entry holes on the bark or wood surface, accompanied by fine boring dust. Internally, the tunnels are often stained dark or black due to the fungal growth, which penetrates the wood fibers and drastically lowers the grade of the sawn timber.
Effective management strategies focus on sanitation and preventative logistics. The most critical step is to minimize the time felled timber remains in the forest, particularly during the warm seasons when beetle activity peaks. Additionally, storing logs in dry conditions and using chemical surface treatments on high-value timber can prevent mass infestation and mitigate economic losses.
