Platypus subgranosus is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the Platypodidae family. These insects are known as ambrosia beetles due to their unique symbiotic relationship with specific fungi, which they cultivate within the galleries they bore into the host trees.

The pest primarily targets a wide range of hardwood species. By boring deep into the xylem of the trunk, these beetles compromise the tree's vascular system, which is especially critical during periods of environmental stress, such as drought or after mechanical damage to the stands.

The life cycle involves the adult beetles boring into the sapwood and heartwood to create complex gallery systems. The female deposits eggs within these tunnels, and the emerging larvae feed exclusively on the ambrosia fungi cultured by the parents on the gallery walls, rather than on the wood itself.
