Crimean bush-cricket

The Crimean bush-cricket (Poecilimon tauricus) is a member of the order Orthoptera and the family Tettigoniidae. While primarily inhabiting wild meadows and scrublands, this insect can occasionally emerge as a pest in localized agricultural settings, particularly in the Crimean region.

The pest poses a threat to various crops, including cereals, vegetables, and young fruit tree foliage. Both nymphs and adults are voracious feeders, consuming significant portions of the plant tissues, which can lead to stunted growth and reduced metabolic efficiency of the affected crops.

The biology of Poecilimon tauricus involves incomplete metamorphosis. Overwintering occurs at the egg stage, typically buried in the soil. Upon hatching in the spring, nymphs pass through several developmental stages (instars) before reaching maturity. The population density is highly dependent on climate variables, with warmer springs often leading to larger subsequent populations.

Damage symptoms include ragged edges on leaves, skeletonization of leaf blades, and consumption of floral parts or fruitlets. This feeding behavior not only reduces the surface area available for photosynthesis but also leaves the plant vulnerable to secondary infections from fungi or bacteria, potentially compromising the yield quality and quantity.

Effective management strategies focus on preventing population surges and protecting vulnerable stages of crop growth. Essential practices include mechanical cultivation to disturb soil-bound eggs, maintaining clean field borders to remove alternate food sources, and conducting regular scouting. If infestation levels exceed economic thresholds, the application of targeted insecticides, following regional safety guidelines, is recommended to mitigate further economic losses.
