Thoracic bush-cricket

The Thoracic bush-cricket (lat. Poecilimon thoracicus) is an insect belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Tettigoniidae. Although many bush-crickets are considered beneficial or neutral, this specific species can become an agricultural nuisance when its population density increases, causing localized damage to vegetation.

This pest is known to attack a variety of crops, including cereals, legumes, and several vegetable species. The damage is often most visible during the early development stages of the plants. In agricultural settings, the pest is typically attracted to lush green growth, which provides both necessary nutrition and a microclimate for the survival of younger instars.

The life cycle of Poecilimon thoracicus follows a typical orthopteran development pattern: the egg stage survives the winter in the soil, followed by several nymphal stages that gradually develop into adults. The timing of hatching and development is highly dependent on spring temperatures. Hot, dry weather patterns during the summer months generally increase the survival rate of the nymphs.

Damage is characterized by the irregular feeding on leaf tissue, stems, and buds. Because the insects possess strong mandibles, they can consume both soft and semi-hardened plant parts, leading to stunted growth or total plant failure if the infestation is severe. The presence of the pest can also open pathways for secondary fungal infections in the damaged areas of the crops.
