Poliaspis media

Poliaspis media is a scale insect species belonging to the family Diaspididae (armored scale insects). This pest is known for its ability to infest various ornamental plants, primarily in subtropical regions and greenhouses, where it can cause significant aesthetic and physiological damage to host plants.

The host range of Poliaspis media includes a variety of evergreen shrubs and trees. These insects preferentially feed on the undersides of leaves and along stems. Because they are stationary for most of their life cycle and protected by a hard, waxy scale, they often go unnoticed by growers until the population reaches damaging levels.

The biological cycle consists of eggs, mobile first-instar nymphs (crawlers), and sessile adult stages. The crawlers are the only mobile phase, responsible for spreading the infestation to new plant parts or adjacent plants. Once they settle, they secrete a protective covering that creates a physical barrier, effectively shielding them from many environmental threats and contact insecticides.

The primary damage is caused by the extraction of plant sap, which leads to nutrient depletion. Infested plants typically exhibit signs such as yellowing leaves (chlorosis), stunted growth, and dieback of young shoots. Furthermore, the weakened state of the plant can predispose it to secondary infections, such as sooty mold or various fungal pathogens that exploit the plant's stressed condition.

Effective management strategies rely on integrated pest management (IPM). Key practices include strict quarantine for new nursery stock and regular inspection of current inventory. When infestations are identified, the use of systemic insecticides is often necessary to reach the insects underneath their protective scales. Horticultural oils and soaps can also be highly effective during the crawler stage, as they suffocate the insects without the high toxicity of traditional chemicals.
