Description
Systematic position: The four-eyed spruce bark beetle (Polygraphus rufipennis) is a species of beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). It is a highly specialized wood-boring insect that causes significant economic damage to spruce forests throughout its native range.
Host plants: The primary hosts for this beetle are various species of spruce, including white, black, and Engelmann spruce. Occasionally, it may infest other conifers like pine or fir when populations are high or when spruce resources are depleted. The insect targets trees that are stressed, injured, or recently fallen.
Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles are small, typically ranging from 2 to 3 mm in length, and possess a dark appearance. The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. They typically overwinter as larvae or adults beneath the bark. In spring, adults emerge, mate, and bore into the phloem and cambium layers of the trunk to lay eggs, initiating the next generation.
Damage and severity: The larvae cause the most damage by feeding on the cambium layer. This feeding activity girdles the tree and interrupts the transport of water and nutrients, which leads to rapid crown dieback, needle discoloration, and tree mortality. Infested trees usually show symptoms like brown boring dust on the bark and numerous small exit holes.
