Description

Systematic position. The spruce engraver beetle (Polygraphus ssiori) belongs to the order Coleoptera, the family Curculionidae, and the subfamily Scolytinae. It is a significant forest pest that primarily targets spruce tree species, leading to severe economic and ecological losses in boreal and temperate forests.

Host plants and damage type. This pest primarily infests various spruce (Picea) species. The damage is caused by both adult beetles and their larvae tunneling through the phloem and cambium layer. This gallery construction effectively girdles the tree, interrupting the flow of nutrients and water, which ultimately leads to the rapid decline and death of the host tree.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Polygraphus ssiori is highly synchronized with seasonal temperature changes. Typically, the insect undergoes one generation per year, with adults overwintering beneath the bark of infested trees. As temperatures rise in spring, the adults emerge to seek new host trees, mate, and initiate the egg-laying process in freshly excavated galleries.

As the infestation progresses, the canopy color fades from green to yellow, and eventually to reddish-brown.
