It is known for its ability to damage a wide array of plant species through both its subterranean larval stage and its aerial adult stage.

This beetle is a polyphagous feeder, meaning it attacks various types of vegetation. The list of susceptible plants includes fruit trees, berry bushes, ornamental garden plants, and several vineyard crops. Because of its broad host range, Popillia hilaris can cause substantial economic losses in commercial nurseries, fruit orchards, and urban landscaping environments.

The life cycle of the beetle is consistent with other scarabaeids, encompassing egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Larvae thrive in moist soil, feeding primarily on root systems, which can lead to plant instability and stunted growth.
