The Lewis beetle (Popillia lewisi) is a species of beetle belonging to the family Scarabaeidae and the order Coleoptera. As a close relative of the Japanese beetle, it is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in its native and invaded regions, capable of causing substantial economic losses in both commercial farming and horticulture.

The pest poses a threat to a diverse array of host plants, including various deciduous trees, shrubs, and field crops. Adult beetles exhibit voracious feeding habits, consuming the foliage, flowers, and fruits of host plants, which can result in complete defoliation if left unmanaged during periods of high population density.

The lifecycle of Popillia lewisi includes a soil-dwelling larval stage and an above-ground adult stage. The larvae feed on the root systems of grasses and young plants, significantly hindering water and nutrient uptake. This underground damage often goes unnoticed until the host plant begins to wilt or die, making early detection a challenge for producers.

The damage caused by adults is characterized by skeletonized leaves, where the soft tissues are removed, leaving only the veins behind.
