Popillia schizonycha

Popillia schizonycha is a beetle species belonging to the family Scarabaeidae within the order Coleoptera. Similar in habit to the well-known Japanese beetle, it acts as a significant herbivore that can impact various agricultural and horticultural crops, requiring careful management within pest control programs.

The host range of this pest is broad, affecting a variety of agricultural commodities including grain crops, legumes, vineyards, and fruit orchards. Because it feeds on both vegetative and reproductive parts of the plant, it poses a recurring challenge to producers who need to maintain plant health throughout the season.

The lifecycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is subterranean, where the white grubs feed on the roots of grasses and crops, causing internal stress to the host. The adult beetles emerge to feed on foliage and flowers, typically during the warmer months, completing the annual or biennial cycle depending on regional climate conditions.

The damage caused by adults is characterized by skeletonizing leaves, where the soft tissue is removed, leaving only the veins. Conversely, the larval damage to the root system is often hidden but destructive, leading to stunted plant growth, nutrient deficiency, and reduced yield due to the plant's inability to efficiently uptake water and minerals from the soil.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Cultural methods include tilling the soil to disturb larvae and removing weed hosts that harbor populations. Chemical intervention should be timed with the emergence of adult beetles. Furthermore, monitoring populations using traps is a recommended practice to decide when to implement targeted biological or chemical control measures.
