Description
Pratylenchus alleni, commonly known as Allen's lesion nematode, is a microscopic migratory endoparasitic roundworm belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Pratylenchidae. These nematodes spend their life cycle shifting between the soil and the plant root tissues, where they feed and reproduce at the expense of the host plant.
This species is recognized primarily for its negative impact on soybean crops and various legumes. Due to its wide host range, which includes many common weeds and field crops, the nematode remains a persistent challenge in agricultural fields, easily surviving in the rhizosphere between planting seasons.
The life cycle of Pratylenchus alleni involves eggs, juvenile stages, and adults. Both juveniles and adults are capable of penetrating the root cortex. Once inside, they move through the tissue, causing physical disruption to the cell walls and consuming the cell contents, which significantly weakens the plant's structural integrity.
Symptoms of infestation are often observed as stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and reduced yields. The damaged root system frequently shows necrotic lesions, which not only inhibit nutrient uptake but also facilitate secondary infections by soil-borne fungi and bacteria, leading to root rot and premature senescence.
