Description
Taxonomic classification: Pratylenchus brachyurus belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Pratylenchidae. It is a highly invasive migratory endoparasite known for its ability to penetrate and move within the roots of various botanical hosts throughout its life cycle.
Host range: This nematode is polyphagous and infests a wide variety of economically significant crops. Major host plants include soybeans, maize, cotton, potatoes, peanuts, and various horticultural crops. Due to its broad host range, it is considered a persistent threat to global agricultural productivity.
Biology and life cycle: The nematode completes its life cycle from egg to juvenile stages and finally to adulthood within the host tissues or the surrounding rhizosphere. The duration of the cycle is temperature-dependent and can be as short as a few weeks under optimal tropical or temperate soil conditions. It survives adverse conditions by remaining in soil particles or root residues.
Damage characteristics and impact: Infestation causes characteristic necrotic lesions on root systems, leading to the destruction of cortical cells.
