Pratylenchus brzeskii

Pratylenchus brzeskii is a species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Pratylenchidae. Known as a type of root-lesion nematode, this microscopic worm acts as an endoparasite, invading the root tissues of host plants and causing significant physiological stress to the plant.

This pest affects a diverse range of crops, including various vegetables, grains, and perennial ornamentals. The nematode is polyphagous, meaning it can feed on multiple host species, which allows it to persist in fields even when crop rotation schemes are not sufficiently diverse. The destruction of root tissues severely impairs the plant's nutrient and water uptake mechanisms.

The life cycle of Pratylenchus brzeskii consists of an egg stage, four juvenile stages, and the adult stage. The nematodes can move both within the root tissues and migrate through the soil to find new infection sites. Environmental factors such as soil temperature and moisture levels are critical for its reproductive success, typically peaking during the active growing season.

Damage caused by this nematode is characterized by visible root lesions, necrosis, and browning of the root system. Infected plants show stunted growth, wilting, and poor yield quality. In many cases, these lesions serve as entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria, which often results in root rot and total plant collapse if left unmanaged.

Management and control strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) techniques. This includes the use of nematode-free planting stock, strict quarantine measures, and the cultivation of antagonistic cover crops that inhibit nematode reproduction. Chemical control via soil fumigation or the application of nematicides may be utilized in high-value cropping systems where infestation levels exceed established economic thresholds.
