Coffee lesion nematode

Systematic position: The coffee lesion nematode (Pratylenchus coffeae) belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Pratylenchidae. This microscopic soil-borne nematode is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, causing substantial yield losses in tropical and subtropical crops globally due to its endoparasitic feeding habits.

Host range: This pest is polyphagous and infests a vast array of economically important plants. Primary hosts include coffee, banana, citrus, ginger, yam, and various sweet potato cultivars. Its ability to infest various weeds and alternative crops makes it a persistent challenge for agricultural production systems in infested areas.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Pratylenchus coffeae is completed within the roots of the host plant or in the surrounding soil. Adult females deposit eggs in root tissues, from which juveniles emerge and immediately begin feeding. As migratory endoparasites, they move within the root cortex, feeding on cell contents, which leads to tissue disintegration.

Damage and severity: The nematode causes characteristic brown necrotic lesions on roots. These lesions disrupt the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients, resulting in stunting, chlorosis, and general plant decline. Infected plants often show poor vigor and are highly susceptible to secondary infections by root-rotting fungi, which often exacerbates the total damage caused to the crop.

Management and protection strategies:

• Strict phytosanitary measures to prevent the spread via contaminated planting material.
• Utilization of nematode-free certified seedlings for all new plantings.
• Implementation of crop rotation schemes using non-host or trap crops to reduce soil populations.
