Description

The lily of the valley nematode (Pratylenchus convallariae) is a microscopic worm within the order Tylenchida and the family Pratylenchidae. As an endoparasitic nematode, it resides within the roots of its host plants, where it causes significant physiological stress and structural damage.

This pest primarily targets Convallaria majalis, but it also infests various other ornamental plants. Because it lives inside the plant tissue, it is often difficult to detect until the damage becomes severe and the plant shows visible symptoms of decline, posing a threat to commercial nurseries and home gardens.

Its biological cycle is characterized by feeding on the root cortex, where the nematode moves through the root tissue, causing cell destruction. The population density typically peaks in the soil during periods of active plant growth, with moisture playing a key role in the migration of juveniles between different parts of the root system.

Symptoms of infestation are often mistaken for nutrient deficiencies or water stress. The most common signs include stunted plant growth, leaf chlorosis, and the development of dark brown lesions on the roots. These necrotic wounds provide entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria, which further exacerbate the health decline of the plant.

Effective management strategies require a combination of preventative measures and chemical interventions. Primary defense involves planting nematode-free stock and maintaining soil hygiene. Where an infestation is present, soil solarization or the application of specialized nematicides may be required to reduce population levels and protect the crops.
