Pratylenchus delattrei is a species of migratory endoparasitic nematodes belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Pratylenchidae. This organism acts as an obligate parasite, dwelling within plant root tissues and soil, causing significant disruptions to the development of the root system. Unlike many other nematode types, these lesion nematodes actively migrate through roots, destroying cells and vascular tissues of the host plant.

The primary hosts for this species include various grain crops, such as wheat and barley, as well as several species of wild grasses. The nematode prefers to parasitize the root system, infiltrating young tissues, which leads to necrosis and the premature death of root hairs. Its wide host range allows this pest to persist in agricultural fields for extended periods, even when crop rotation practices are applied.

The biology of Pratylenchus delattrei is closely linked to the lifecycle of the host's root system. Adult individuals and larvae of all stages are capable of infecting plant tissues. The lifecycle progresses through an egg stage, four larval stages, and the adult phase. The entire developmental process usually completes within 30 to 45 days, depending on soil temperature and moisture levels, allowing the pest to produce multiple generations during a single growing season.

The pattern of damage manifests as stunted plant growth, leaf chlorosis, delayed development, and significant yield reduction. Visually, this is characterized by the appearance of brown lesions on the roots, which eventually coalesce, leading to total root degradation. The damage caused by this parasite is often exacerbated by secondary infections, such as fungal and bacterial pathogens, which easily invade the roots through the lesions created by the nematodes.

Control measures require a comprehensive approach:

  • Implementing crop rotation with non-host species to break the pest cycle.
  • Rigorous weed management, as many weeds act as reservoirs for the nematode.
  • Utilization of clean, certified, and nematode-free planting material.
  • Application of pre-sowing nematicides in fields with high infestation levels.
  • Agronomic practices aimed at promoting the regeneration and overall health of the plant root system.
