Pratylenchus fallax

Pratylenchus fallax is a significant species of migratory endoparasitic nematodes belonging to the family Pratylenchidae within the order Tylenchida. Known as a root-lesion nematode, this pathogen inhabits both the soil environment and the internal root tissue, causing considerable damage to the vascular system of various plants.

The host range of Pratylenchus fallax is notably broad, encompassing various economically important crops. It frequently attacks cereals, potatoes, sugar beets, horticultural crops, and numerous forage grasses. Due to its migratory nature, the nematode can move between the root cortex and the surrounding soil, making it difficult to eradicate once it is established in the field.

The life cycle of this nematode is continuous under favorable moisture and temperature conditions. Females deposit eggs either within the root parenchyma or in the rhizosphere. Upon hatching, the juveniles (larvae) penetrate the root tissue and begin feeding. Throughout their lifecycle, they cause mechanical damage by tearing cell walls and consuming the cytoplasm, which leads to cell death.

The primary symptom of infestation is the development of brown to black necrotic lesions on the roots. These lesions often coalesce, leading to severe decay and pruning of the lateral root system. The resulting damage reduces the root's ability to absorb water and nutrients, which manifests as stunted growth, chlorosis, and wilting in the aerial parts of the crop, ultimately causing significant yield losses.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key practices include crop rotation with non-host or antagonistic crops (such as certain cultivars of marigolds or specific grasses), maintenance of high soil organic matter, and the use of nematode-free planting material. In severe cases, chemical soil fumigation or the application of biological control agents, including specific fungi and bacteria, can significantly suppress nematode population densities.
