Description
Pratylenchus goodeyi is a member of the Phylum Nematoda, Order Tylenchida, and Family Pratylenchidae. It is classified as an obligate endoparasite that spends its life cycle within the root tissues of host plants, where it feeds on cortical cells and causes significant physiological stress.
The primary host for this nematode is the banana (Musa spp.), especially in highland regions where cooler temperatures favor its development. While it is most infamous for causing damage to banana plantations, it has also been recorded infesting coffee roots and various other plants within tropical and subtropical agricultural systems.
The biology of Pratylenchus goodeyi is defined by its migratory endoparasitic behavior. Both larvae and adults move through the root cortex, creating tunnels as they feed and multiply. The life cycle consists of an egg stage, four juvenile stages, and an adult stage. Reproduction can occur sexually or through parthenogenesis, allowing the population to rapidly increase in suitable moist soil environments.
Damage symptoms typically manifest as localized necrotic lesions on the root surface. These lesions disrupt the plant's vascular system, hindering the uptake of water and essential nutrients. Infected plants often show stunted growth, reduced fruit yield, and, in severe cases, the entire root system may collapse, leading to the toppling of the banana mats.
