Systematic position: Pratylenchus hexincisus belongs to the phylum Nematoda, order Tylenchida, and family Pratylenchidae. It is widely known as a root-lesion nematode, a microscopic plant-parasitic roundworm that dwells primarily in the rhizosphere and root tissues of host plants.

Host range: This nematode is polyphagous, meaning it attacks a vast range of crops. Significant economic losses are reported in maize (corn), wheat, barley, potatoes, and sugar beets. Legumes and various common agricultural weeds are also known to serve as hosts, allowing the nematode population to persist in fields between growing seasons.

Biology and life cycle: Pratylenchus hexincisus is a migratory endoparasite. Both juveniles and adults penetrate the roots of host plants, moving through the cortical tissue and feeding on cell contents. They reproduce in the soil and root tissues. Under favorable temperatures and moisture conditions, the life cycle is relatively rapid, allowing for multiple generations per growing season.

Symptoms and damage: The feeding activity of these nematodes results in characteristic brown necrotic lesions on the roots. These lesions interfere with the plant's ability to uptake water and essential nutrients. Infected plants typically show symptoms such as stunting, chlorosis (yellowing), wilting, and poor general development, often leading to reduced yield and poor crop quality.

Management and control: Controlling root-lesion nematodes requires an integrated approach due to their soil-borne nature:

• Maintaining high soil fertility to help plants tolerate nematode damage.
• Effective weed management, as many weed species maintain nematode levels in the soil.
