Pratylenchus hippeastri belongs to the phylum Nematoda, order Tylenchida, and family Pratylenchidae. This microscopic worm is an obligate endoparasite that leads a migratory lifestyle within the tissues of plant roots and bulbs, causing significant disruptions to their physiological development and overall health.

The primary hosts for this species are members of the Amaryllidaceae family, including hippeastrum, amaryllis, and clivia. Infestations are also recorded in various other ornamental bulbous crops grown in greenhouses and commercial nurseries, where the parasite spreads rapidly through contaminated soil, substrate, or infected propagation material.

The biology of this pest is characterized by a direct life cycle. Both adults and juveniles penetrate the roots or bulb scales, feeding on the contents of parenchyma cells. Optimal conditions for reproduction include high soil moisture and moderate temperatures, which make protected cultivation environments ideal for the rapid buildup of Pratylenchus hippeastri populations.

Damage symptoms typically manifest as necrotic lesions on the roots, decay of the root system, and general stunting of the plant. Infected specimens exhibit yellowing leaves and poor or non-existent flowering. These root lesions often serve as entry points for secondary fungal and bacterial infections, which frequently lead to the complete rotting of the bulbs.

Control measures rely on an integrated approach centered on rigorous phytosanitary practices:

• Sterilizing potting mixes and growing media prior to planting.
• Regular monitoring of root systems during repotting for signs of damage.
