Meadow nematode

The meadow nematode (Pratylenchus pratensis) belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Pratylenchidae. This microscopic nematode is a highly destructive endoparasite that invades the root tissues of various plants, acting as one of the primary soil-borne pests impacting global agriculture.

This species has a wide host range, commonly affecting cereals such as wheat, barley, and oats, as well as potatoes, sugar beets, and corn. By feeding on the cortical cells of the roots, the nematode deprives the plant of its vital infrastructure, directly hindering the uptake of water and essential nutrients from the soil.

The life cycle of the meadow nematode consists of several developmental stages. After entering the roots, they reproduce within the tissue, leading to a rapid population buildup. They can also survive in the soil for extended periods under unfavorable environmental conditions, which contributes to their persistence in agricultural fields even after rotation crops are planted.

Symptoms of infestation are typically characterized by the appearance of small, dark necrotic lesions on the roots. These lesions hinder root growth and weaken the plant, making it significantly more susceptible to various fungal and bacterial pathogens. Severe infestations often result in stunted growth, chlorosis, and considerable yield losses across large-scale plantings.
