Pratylenchus quasitereoides

Systematic position. Pratylenchus quasitereoides belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Rhabditida, and the family Pratylenchidae. Known commonly as a root-lesion nematode, this species acts as a migratory endoparasite, meaning it moves freely within plant tissues and soil during its various life stages.

Host plants. This nematode has a broad host range, posing a significant threat to various agricultural crops. Major hosts include cereal crops, corn, potatoes, and several vegetables. The damage is particularly severe when populations build up in fields with continuous monoculture practices, leading to cumulative losses in crop health.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of an egg stage, four juvenile stages, and the adult stage. The nematode spends a significant portion of its life cycle burrowing into root cortical tissue. Reproduction is rapid under favorable moisture and temperature conditions, typically between 20°C and 25°C. They are capable of surviving harsh conditions by entering a state of dormancy within the soil profile.

Symptoms and damage. The feeding activity of Pratylenchus quasitereoides causes brown, necrotic lesions on roots. This damage disrupts the plant's ability to uptake water and essential nutrients. Above-ground symptoms include stunting, chlorosis, reduced vigor, and premature wilting, especially under drought stress. Often, the damage serves as an entry point for other soil-borne pathogens like fungi and bacteria.

Management and control. Managing this pest requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy focused on long-term prevention:

• Implementing crop rotations with non-host or resistant plant species.
• Maintaining field hygiene by controlling weeds that act as alternate hosts.
• Testing soil samples before planting to determine initial nematode density.
• Applying bio-fumigation or cover crops that suppress nematode populations.
